This was the first major project for my 2D Design & Color Theory course. The assignment:
Intent is to show the use of the elements of line, shape, space, texture, pattern & value in a design with a thematic approach.website | twitter | facebook
1. Find 5 black and white images of related objects. For example: knives, guns, animals of the same species, women in hats, men in hats, etc. Any object, but has to be related in an obvious way. [I choose Indian art and culture.]
2. Do 5 simplified drawings with pencil or marker (B&W only) of each of your images. Focus on shapes, lines, strong value contrasts (rather than details). Do these drawings on tracing paper and make them each approx. 3” x 3” – 5” x 5” . Try to do each of your drawings in a different way (using different tools, different marks, etc.)
3. Select 3 images from your drawings to use as design elements. Create 3 different designs using these elements and arrange them using the principles of rhythm, balance and emphasis. Your designs will already be somewhat unified because of the images and also by the use of black & white. Do your 3 roughs 10” x 10” on tracing paper using black marker and/or pencil.
4. Select one of your designs (and possibly aspects of all 3) and produce a finished 10” x 10” design with black * white acrylic. ( Do a rough to size on tracing paper before committing to your final design). For this one, you must include a range of greys. Do it on bristol with margins of 3” top, 4” bottom, 2” sides. I want it flapped and labeled on the back.
